Wiser Survivor Study


An exercise and Weight Loss Study for Breast Cancer Survivors

Presented by University of Pennsylvania Center for Clinical Epidemiology & Biostatistics
in partnership with Chester County Hospital.

What is WISER Survivor?
A research study to test the effects of exerise and/or weight loss on:

  • Lymphedema
  • Risk factors for breast cancer recurrence
  • Quality of life

The knowledge gained from this study may impact recommendations for exercise for health promotion in breast cancer survivors.

What is Lymphedema?
Lymphedema is defined as a swelling of the arm or torso that may result from changes to the lymph system after breast cancer treatment.

You are Eligibile for WISER Survivor if :

  • You are currently free of cancer.
  • You have a few extra pounds to lose.
  • You have not participated in strength training or other upper body resistive exercise within the past year.
  • You are not currently using any weight loss medications.
  • You have breast cancer related lymphedema. *Note that some women may have had symptoms of lymphedema, but have never been diagnosed. (If unsure, give us a call so we can help determine whether you are eligible.)

ALL WISER Survivor participants Receive :

  • Two custom fitted compression garments
  • Access to a lymphedema specialist

Participants will be randomly placed in one of four groups for 1 year:

  1. Lymphedema care only
  2. Lymphedema care & Exercise
  3. Lymphedema care & Weight loss
  4. Lymphedema care, Exercise & Weight loss combined
