Chronic swelling of the arm, hand, leg or foot/ankle, known as Lymphedema, is sometimes a complication following breast or leg surgery. This condition can limit movement, make clothes uncomfortable, and cause undue anxiety for women dealing with breast cancer or disease. Through the Lymphedema Treatment Program at The Center for Physical Rehabilitation and Sports Medicine, there is help.
Our Lymphedema service offers a 4-12 week program aimed at providing treatment of lymphedema and teaching you how to manage this condition independently at home. After an intial assessment, specially trained physical therapists develop an individualized plan of care that will help reduce volume and improve texture of the arm and/or hand, leg and/or feet, improve appearances and increase range of motion and get you back into your favorite clothing. Using a variety of proven treatment techniques and exercises, your therapist will meet with you approximately once a week for a one-to-two-hour session. Frequently, patients begin to see signs of reduced swelling and improved movement after the first visit.
Beyond the treatment component of the program, your therapist will teach you the techniques and tips needed to successfully manage this condition on your own. Follow up visits after the initial treatment program help your therapist monitor your progress and your ability to carry out the self-care techniques.
A physician's prescription is needed for treatment. We can assist you in obtaining one.
