Highest “Three Star” Rating for Our Cardiac Surgery Program

Released: November 25, 2009

Top 10% in the country. That is where The Society of Thoracic Surgeons National Adult Cardiac Surgery Database has ranked the Cardiac Surgery program at The Chester County Hospital. The program has also received a "three star" rating for cardiac surgery by the Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS).

According to Martin LeBoutillier, III, MD, Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgeon, The CardioVascular Center at The Chester County Hospital, the "three star" rating denotes the highest category of quality and indicates that The Chester County Hospital has scored significantly higher than the overall STS mean score. "In the current analysis of national data covering close to 900 hospitals in the period from July 1, 2008 through June 30, 2009, the Cardiac Surgery performance at The Chester County Hospital was found to lie in the highest quality tier," states Dr. LeBoutillier.

The "three star" composite score is based on NQF (National Quality Forum) measures. Eleven of 21 measures are incorporated into the composite quality score. The 11 measures are divided into four domains:

  • Avoidance of operative mortality
  • Avoidance of major morbidity
  • High quality intraoperative care as measured by use of IMA (internal mammary artery)
  • Appropriate perioperative medication usage

"This report is an important quality improvement tool for our Hospital," notes Chris Aylsworth, Chief Physician Assistant, The CardioVascular Center at The Chester County Hospital. "It allows us to compare our risk-adjusted performance with like-sized hospitals, with local hospitals and with the national average. We are proud of the impressive results of this year's ranking. We look to continually grow and improve the outcomes and quality of our services."
