Pre-Placement Functional Capacity Evaluations

The Pre-Placement Functional Capacity Evaluation evaluates an individual's ability to perform the essential physical requirements of his or her job safely and correctly. The information provided will assist an employer in placing an employee in a suitable job, thus decreasing the risk of injury. The Pre-Placement Evaluation entails a musculoskeletal evaluation as well as job simulation exercises.

Components of the exam

  • Musculoskeletal Evaluation: Assesses the individual's flexibility, range of motion, and strength
  • Posture and Body Mechanics: These elements are key to safe material handling and are reviewed and monitored throughout the evaluation process
  • Material Handling Skills: Using a current job description, candidates are evaluated for their functional capacity during various lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling tasks

A registered physical therapist with experience and expertise specific to the industrial setting administers the Functional Capacity Evaluation at The Occupational Health Center. In compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act, this evaluation replaces lower back X-rays and provides valuable baseline data that may be useful in the event an injury does occur.
