RSV (respiratory syncytial virus) - Tis the Season

The respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is a member of the family of viruses that cause notable human infections such as measles, mumps and some cases of the common cold, bronchitis and croup. Every hospital, emergency room and medical practice is impressed by the seasonal outbreaks of infants and children presenting with respiratory symptoms, some of which could be RSV. Older children and adults usually complain of a cough, stuffy nose and low-grade fever; however, infants (especially those who are high risk and/or whose immune systems are compromised) can become quite ill with breathing difficulty (shortness of breath or rapid breathing), severe coughing that can become croup-like in quality with a "seal bark" sound, and even cyanosis (a

COLD HEARTED: Cool the Body, Save the Brain

Most of us have witnessed this dramatic scene in a movie or on TV: A person collapses in cardiac arrest; bystanders administer CPR until EMTs arrive with a defibrillator, the heart starts beating again, and everyone breathes a collective sigh of relief. A heartbeat is a good sign, considering that only about 40,000 of the 300,000 Americans who go into cardiac arrest outside a hospital each year actually make it to the hospital.* But it's by no means an automatic happy ending: Fewer than 8-percent of these patients will survive.** Those who do are just beginning a long uphill climb to return to the lives they once knew. How far they make it often depends on how badly the brain was damaged.

Diabetes: An Epidemic That Requires Preventive Action - Now

The word epidemic is often enough to trigger the urgent response of many to get their annual flu shot every fall. But in the United States, we are in the midst of another epidemic that should make us all take notice and for many, take action. This epidemic is just as real, on a significant rise, far more devastating, and as yet has no immunization. The epidemic is diabetes.

Transitioning Teens to an Adult Healthcare Provider

Pediatricians and Family Medicine physicians are trained and capable of providing healthcare for children starting at birth. While family doctors can continue as caregivers on into the adult years, when pediatricians have been the providers, once the child reaches 18 it may be time to graduate to an adult Primary Care Physician (PCP). Some pediatricians may extend care up through the college years, so it is best to ask before your child reaches their late teens.

ADVANCING NURSING EXCELLENCE - New Structure Gives Nurses a Voice in Decision-Making and Encourages Professional Achievement

If you or your loved ones have spent any time in the hospital, you know firsthand how essential nurses are to each patient's experience and medical outcome. What you may not know is that care giving at the bedside is just one dimension of what a modern nurse does. Today's healthcare environment demands that nurses stay current with ever-changing standards, learn to use a wide array of tools and technology, and keep up with the latest research. They must collaborate effectively with physicians and other staff while using their experiences to improve the quality of care and shape their hospital's clinical goals.
